Interoperability: The Real Bottleneck to Scale

Event recap

The Boston Blockchain Association’s latest Institutional Digital Asset Adoption Series, hosted by the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology (FCAT®), convened industry leaders to explore one of the most pressing challenges facing institutional blockchain adoption: interoperability.

Throughout the discussion, panelists emphasized that the future of digital assets will be shaped not by a single blockchain emerging as the dominant platform, but by the ability of diverse networks, institutions, and financial infrastructure to work together seamlessly. As one speaker noted, users don’t think about the infrastructure behind a phone call—they simply expect it to work. Achieving that same level of seamless connectivity is becoming the benchmark for digital asset ecosystems.

The conversation highlighted how the industry has evolved beyond demonstrating blockchain’s technical capabilities. As tokenized assets, stablecoins, and on-chain markets continue to mature, the focus has shifted toward connecting fragmented systems, enabling blockchains, custodians, financial institutions, and payment networks to exchange assets and data efficiently while delivering a simple user experience.

Panelists also discussed the growing importance of security and governance across interconnected systems. As traditional financial infrastructure becomes increasingly integrated with distributed ledger technology, institutions must build resilient trust models that address risks at the intersection of these environments. Robust governance, layered security, and operational resilience were identified as essential to supporting institutional adoption at scale.

Legal and regulatory certainty emerged as another critical theme. Participants underscored the need for clear and consistent regulatory frameworks that enable organizations to invest with confidence, modernize operating models, and deploy production-scale blockchain solutions. For global institutions, harmonizing compliance across multiple jurisdictions remains a significant challenge.

The discussion further reinforced that successful tokenization extends well beyond placing assets on-chain. Custody, identity, governance, compliance, and legal rights must evolve alongside the technology to support scalable adoption. Without a coordinated interoperability strategy, organizations risk creating new silos instead of unlocking the efficiencies blockchain promises.

The session concluded with a look toward the future of blockchain infrastructure. Rather than converging on a single network, the ecosystem is becoming increasingly specialized, with platforms optimized for payments, capital markets, settlement, identity, and asset issuance. Interoperability will enable institutions to leverage these purpose-built networks while maintaining connectivity across the broader financial ecosystem. Panelists also identified collateral mobility as a significant opportunity, noting that secure tokenization has the potential to reduce settlement friction, improve capital efficiency, and unlock liquidity while preserving compliance and legal certainty.

The Boston Blockchain Association thanks the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology (FCAT®), our panelists, and everyone who joined the discussion for contributing to an engaging conversation on the future of interoperable digital asset infrastructure.
